December Mini-view
We’ve added quite a few movies to Stoski’s Ultimate Movies Rating Guide this month, from X to Y to Z. Looking for something to watch? Here are a few things that might have flown past your radar.
Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Dinner for Schmucks has a real ’40 year old virgin’ vibe. They’re both light-hearted comedies starring Steve Carell and featuring Paul Rudd, except that Paul Rudd is paying a bigger part in this movie. Otherwise, it’s basically 40 Year Old Virgin; Paul Rudd gets to know a whacky Steve Carell character somehow, zany side characters get involved, hijinks ensue. Very easy to watch and also pretty great!
3/5
John Wick 2 (2017)
It’s okay. More of the same, really. Kind of boring. I enjoyed the first movie but this one is decadently less enjoyable despite the fact that it follows the same plot as the first movie (badass that everyone fears goes on a killing spree).
The opening sequence is puzzling. Actually, the entire movie is puzzling. The enemy gang could have dispatched Wick with a few bullets but consistently go in for the hand-to-hand suicide – single file! Another example of idiotic enemies being the main reason that action movie heroes succeed. I don’t need these weak-ass movie conveniences!
2/5
Halloween (2018)
Pro: An good addition to the franchise that’s exciting throughout. The overall story is the same as the original movie, but new and interesting scene dynamics keep it fresh and entertaining. The movie also created thoughtful discussion within my friend group about the ethics of the death penalty and the role of the police. Great work, movie!
Con: Cheap, unsatisfying, sequel bait ending.
