January Mini-view

We’ve added quite a few movies to Stoski’s Ultimate Movies Rating Guide this month, from X to Y to Z. Looking for something to watch? Here are a few things that might have flown past your radar. Lots of Netflix originals this month, but hey, when they’re good they’re good.

Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday (2016)

Pee-wee is a wholesome guy, content with his wholesome life in his wholesome home of Anytown USA, when a strange gentleman shows up and opens his eyes to the world that he’s missing out on. Pee-wee must now make a choice; stay at home and miss out on his new friend’s New York City birthday party, or throw caution to the wind and explore the world in order to meet his new friend in the Big Apple.

In opposition to the horror or summer blockbuster genres, this film is old fashioned wholesome good times for the whole family and will fill you with joy from start to end.

1922 (2017)

1922 is a Netflix original film based on Stephen King’s well-received novella of the same name. As the trailers may tip viewers off, the film revolves around a man (Wilfred James) who kills his wife (Arlette) who wanted to sell their farm land (both he and she had considerable estates in their respective name) and move to the city. Entertaining as it may be, the film loses points due to the absurdity of the main character’s response to learning that his wife wants to sell both hers and his farm land, and move to the city, along with their teenage son.

After a short negotiation period, Wilfred decides to lie to, and then kill his wife, over this dispute. Rather than continue to find an amicable resolution that would suit both parties – which was barely even attempted – Wilfred decides to jump to the extreme and simply kill Arlette. This jumping to extremes was distracting and prevented the proper enjoyment of what was otherwise a fine tale of misery and despair.
