July Movie Mini-view Roundup; Toy Story 4 wasn't even Good

We’ve added a few movies to Stoski’s Ultimate Movies Rating Guide. Looking for something to watch? Here are a few things that might have flown past your radar.

Robin Hood Men in Tights (1993)

If you’re a fan of laughing and having a good time, then you’re a fan of Robin Hood Men in Tights. This movie came out in 1993 and to my delight it completely holds up! My friends and I laughed the entire way through. Totally worth the price of admission.

The comedy comes from the contrast between reality and absurdity. Not everything is said as a joke. The story conveys a cohesive and realistic narrative, only some of which are altered, for comedic effect. If the entire movie was one big joke, then it would lose its punch. The film makers know how to craft a good parody, and it shows.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

I saw Toy Story in theaters, and it was a letdown. If you remember Toy Story 1 and 2 fondly and are expecting similar quality in storytelling, you won’t find it here. It’s okay. Not great, but nothing special. If you never see this movie, sleep with the comfort of the fact that you aren’t missing anything special.

There is one interesting tidbit; for the first time, we get to see a toy actually transition (???) from being intimate, into sentience. It also brings forth the question of, because this ‘toy’ was created from pieces of trash, what in the Toy Story universe is even able to become sentient? Are the toy blocks sentient? Are playing cards sentient? If you draw on a piece of paper and play with it, can it become sentient?

These aren’t crucial questions, as is the question of Woody’s age (which the movie also brings up), but if you waste your time with Toy Story 4, you might as well get some enjoyment from it.
